Where are you Christmas?

So far, it doesn't really feel like Christmas to me yet. I am very sad about this. Maybe even a little depressed? The other day I was trying to figure out why I wasn't really feeling the Christmas spirit, because you would think that in NYC of all places, you would feel it a ton, but I think it is because where we are, I don't really see any Christmas lights or decorations. I just see a bunch of classrooms from my window, and no one has lights in their windows or anything. The only places to see lights are all the big displays in Midtown, or in Central Park, or other neighborhoods that have trees and displays, but you have to go a ways. It makes me sad that I don't see Christmas lights every time I leave our house.

The other thing that I realized is making it not feel like Christmas, is that it doesn't smell like Christmas outside. No one has fireplaces or chimneys, so there is no lovely scent of smoke filling the air. It still just smells like the city. I don't know what it is about Provo and Sacramento, but it smells SO great during the holidays. It does smell nice and Christmasy in my apartment though... love my scentsy! I have finally gotten my cute little Christmas tree, and put up lights on my balcony, but I still need to put the ornaments on the tree and put up a garland and our stockings. Once I get that all up, I will take pictures and finally post pictures of our apartment. Sorry I haven't before, I keep forgetting. But now I might as well just wait until it looks all cute n' Christmasy.

So anyway, I am going to make more of an effort to play more Christmas music, bake goodies, watch Holiday movies, and get out and enjoy Christmas in the city. And any tips you have for helping induce the Christmas spirit would be greatly appreciated.

I am not sure if you have cable but the Family channel has a christmas movie on everynight. We have been enjoying them, even if we only catch a short clip of them it is fun to see.

Another suggestion is www.accuholiday.com and www.pandora.com (type your favorite christmas song into the generator and build your own station) We have those playing all the time in our not christmasy house.

To get the Christmas (Christ) spirit, I suggest you go to lds.org and watch the First Presidency Christmas Devotional. Then talk as a family about how much God has blessed you and how much you love Jesus. Then emulate Him by finding some lonely people to visit or some people with less to whom you can give some of your abundance. It helps us every year. After all the Christmas spirit comes from Christ, and He gives us everything.

Not to put salt in the wound, but I was thinking of you today when I left work. I could smell smoke from a nearby chimney in the air when I was walking in the parking lot. I thought, "so this is what Morgan is talking about."

Gingerbread cookies are soo much fun to make. They're a lot easier to roll out than regular cookies. I bet Asher could even roll them out and cut them with a cookie cutter. Plus the gingerbread smell is the best Christmasy smell. That would definitly put you in the holiday mood.

You could always play the Christmas hymns on CD or some Christmas MOTAB while you're baking.

I don't know if you want to spend $, but Fisher Price makes a nativity set for kids. Ella loves it and it even plays Away in a Manger. It's a great way to get the kids in the Christmas spirit.

I'm sure it's because you have no Galena videos to watch from your high school days. I still need to find someone to make the VHS tapes into DVDs. We've been doing Christmas music for six weeks now. But as you well know, there's nothing that gets you more in the mood for Christmas than show week!

We do Christmas music all the time too. It really helps! Lights and stories and movies on tv help also. We're crazy and actually put up decorations right after Halloween this year (I get more excited for Christmas than my babies I think!)

The city really is an amazing place to be at Christmas time. IT is different for sure, but there are so many cool things to see and do. There are several places that have great train exhibits, some cost money, and some are free. Down at the South Street Seaport on Saturdays there is a "singing tree." Have you checked out Rockefeller center and also all the window displays?
